Juxtaposing the symbolic and the material signifiers of wealth, The Empress' New Crown asks us pertinent questions about the politics of luxury. In our celebrity-as-royalty, glamour obsessed culture, we are all too often blinded by the glint of ostentatious displays of wealth. Ignoring the political and social ramifications of vast accumulations of money and power, we focus rather on surfaces— mystified by the sparkle of those symbols.
